Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the main cause of skin cancer.

UV radiation is a type of energy that is released naturally by the sun and artificially from sunbeds. Too much UV radiation, for instance from getting sunburnt or using sunbeds, sunlamps and tanning booths, can damage DNA in your skin cells and cause skin cancer.

Up to 9 in 10 UK cases of melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, could be prevented by staying safe in the sun and avoiding sunbeds. This can also prevent other types of skin cancer too.

This summer RM Partners is working with TikTok influencers who are sharing their tips and advice across social media for staying safe in the sun.

See below our Frequently Asked Questions to get all the information you need to stay safe this summer.

How can I stay safe in the sun?

Seek shade – take a break under trees or umbrellas, especially in the middle of the day when the sun is strongest.

Cover up – wear a top that covers your shoulders, a wide brimmed hat and UV protection sunglasses.

Sunscreen – pick one with at least SPF 30 and 4 or 5 stars. Use it generously and regularly.

What are the risks of using sunbeds?

Cancer Research UK advises that people should not use sunbeds or sunlamps. Sunbeds and lamps can be more dangerous than sunlight because they use a concentrated source of UV radiation. Health risks linked to sunbeds and other UV tanning equipment include:

  • Skin cancer

  • Premature skin ageing

  • Sunburnt skin

  • Eye irritation

Are there restrictions on who can use sunbeds?

Yes, it is against the law in the UK for anyone 17 years old or under to use sunbeds in commercial premises. This includes in tanning salons, beauty salons, leisure centres, gyms and hotels.
